LOS ANGELES, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The United States had reported 4,852 confirmed measles cases as of Thursday, according to the latest data released Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Of the total, 4,834 cases were reported across 47 U.S. jurisdictions, while 18 cases were reported among international visitors to the United States, the CDC said.
A total of 511 patients, or about 11 percent of those confirmed to have measles, have been hospitalized.
About 96 percent of the cases involved people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown, according to the CDC.
The cumulative case count this year has already more than doubled last year's total of 2,289.
The resurgence marks the highest annual measles case count in the United States in more than three decades. It has also highlighted challenges facing the country's public health system, U.S. media reported, citing experts.
The spread of the virus reflects declining vaccination rates, eroding trust in health institutions and growing challenges in persuading people to protect themselves, their children and their communities, CNBC reported.
