LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Universal's horror film "Other Mommy" topped the North American box office in its opening weekend, earning an estimated 27.5 million U.S. dollars, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Rentrak.
Internationally, the film took in 17.69 million dollars across 50 markets for a global total of 45.19 million dollars.
Directed by Rob Savage and starring Jessica Chastain, the film is based on Josh Malerman's novel "Incidents Around the House" and follows a young girl named Bela who enters an increasingly dark and terrifying world after forming a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.
The film received largely negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. It holds an 18 percent approval rating on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 57 reviews, and received a "D+" grade on CinemaScore's A+ to F scale, based on audience polling.
Amazon MGM Studios' thriller film "Verity" ranked second in its second weekend with 11.48 million dollars. The film has grossed 53.86 million dollars in North America through Sunday.
Rounding out the top three, Sony's horror film "Resident Evil" earned 8.35 million dollars in its fourth weekend for a domestic cume of 138.5 million dollars.
