Ngetich sets world record, Almgren breaks European mark at road running worlds

OSLO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Agnes Ngetich broke the women's-only half marathon world record and Sweden's Andreas Almgren set a European record as they won titles at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on Sunday.

Ngetich led from the start to win the women's race in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 15 seconds, shaving one second off the previous record set by compatriot Peres Jepchirchir in 2020. The mark is subject to ratification by World Athletics.

The victory gave Ngetich her second global title of the year after she won the world cross-country championships in January.

Kenya's Veronica Loleo finished 50 seconds behind in 1:06:05 to take silver, while Rwanda's Florence Niyonkuru claimed bronze in a national record of 1:06:08.

In the men's race, Almgren pulled clear of Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir in the final sprint to win in 58:06, improving his own European record by 35 seconds and securing his first global gold medal.

Kipkorir took silver in 58:11, while Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei finished third in a personal best of 58:26.

Kenya won both the men's and women's team titles in the half marathon.

The half marathons concluded the two-day championships, which also featured men's and women's races over the mile and 5 kilometers.
