SAN FRANCISCO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday reported net sales of 200.6 billion U.S. dollars for the second quarter, up 20 percent year over year.
The Seattle-based e-commerce and cloud-computing giant posted quarterly net income of 62.6 billion dollars, or 5.75 dollars per diluted share, compared with 18.2 billion dollars, or 1.68 dollars per diluted share, in the same period last year.
Amazon said its second-quarter net income included 53.4 billion dollars in non-operating pre-tax other income, primarily from its investments in artificial intelligence company Anthropic.
The company's operating income increased 43 percent year over year to 27.5 billion dollars from 19.2 billion dollars.
Amazon's North America segment sales increased 16 percent to 116.2 billion dollars, while its international segment sales rose 15 percent to 42.2 billion dollars.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) segment sales surged 37 percent year over year to 42.2 billion dollars, marking its fastest growth in 18 quarters. The segment's operating income increased to 16.6 billion dollars from 10.2 billion dollars a year earlier.
"AWS is booming, growing 36.7% year-over-year in Q2 -- our fastest growth in 18 quarters," said Andy Jassy, president and CEO of Amazon.
Jassy said the annualized revenue run rates of Amazon's AI and chip businesses had each exceeded 25 billion dollars. The company's advertising business recorded year-over-year growth of 26 percent.
Amazon's operating cash flow increased 33 percent to 161.4 billion dollars for the trailing 12 months. Free cash flow, however, declined to an outflow of 7.6 billion dollars, primarily reflecting increased investment in artificial intelligence.
The company expects third-quarter net sales of between 197 billion and 202 billion dollars, representing year-over-year growth of between 9 percent and 12 percent. Operating income is expected to range from 22.5 billion to 26.5 billion dollars.
