3 killed, over 40 injured after bus overturns in southern Brazil

SAO PAULO, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and more than 40 others injured early Wednesday after a tour bus from Paraguay veered off the road and overturned in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, authorities said.

The accident occurred on a state highway between the municipalities of Maravilha and Sao Miguel da Boa Vista in western Santa Catarina, near the border with Argentina.

A fire department spokesperson said 67 people were on board.

Authorities said the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve before the bus left the road and rolled down a roadside ravine.

More than 20 firefighters, a dozen fire department vehicles, as well as emergency medical teams, military and civil police, and forensic police joined the rescue operation.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
