LOS ANGELES, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Disney's musical adventure film "Moana" took the top spot at the North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 43 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
It is the live-action adaptation of Disney's 2016 animated film "Moana." Directed by Thomas Kail, the film stars Catherine Laga'aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui.
"Moana" holds an approval rating of 34 percent based on 152 reviews on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes currently and received an "A-" grade from audiences on an "A+" to "F" scale polled by CinemaScore.
Universal Pictures and Illumination's animated comedy film "Minions & Monsters" dropped to second place in its second weekend with 20.5 million dollars. The film has now grossed 108.3 million dollars domestically and 280 million dollars worldwide.
Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" landed in third place in its fourth weekend with a domestic total of 403.8 million dollars.
