10 dead after stone quarry collapse in eastern Rwanda

KIGALI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were killed when a quarry caved in at a village in eastern Rwanda's Bugesera district, police said Friday.

The accident occurred Thursday in Nyamabuye village, Ntarama sector, when a quarry collapsed onto workers who were engaged at the site in the extraction of construction materials, including sand and stones, police told local media.

The sudden collapse trapped workers under the debris, resulting in multiple deaths, police added.

Police said investigations were still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Bodies of all the victims were retrieved by a search and rescue team late Thursday and transferred to Kacyiru Hospital in the capital city Kigali, according to local officials.

District Mayor Richard Mutabazi said authorities banned work at the site following the accident.
