6 migrant bodies found in desert in SE Libya

TRIPOLI, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of six migrants were found in the Al-Wahat area, about 1,000 km southeast of the Libyan capital Tripoli, local authorities said Tuesday.

The Al-Wahat Security Directorate said in a statement that the bodies were found about 200 km northwest of the city of Jalu. It added that members of an eastern Libyan military unit rescued 19 migrants from the same group two days earlier after their vehicle broke down while traveling through the area.

The rescued migrants were taken to Jalu General Hospital for medical treatment and identification procedures, while the bodies were transferred to the central hospital, according to the statement.

The region serves as a transit route for irregular migrants traveling from Libya's far south toward the coastal cities. Migrants frequently become stranded or lost in the vast desert, sometimes resulting in deaths and disappearances.
