2nd LD: At least one dies in train collision in eastern England


LONDON, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Two trains collided near Bedford in eastern England on Friday evening, killing at least one person and injuring several others, according to British Transport Police.

The incident occurred at around 5:15 p.m. local time when a Luton Airport Express service struck another East Midlands Railway service, British media reported.

"We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has very sadly died," British Transport Police said in a statement.

The local ambulance service said it had dispatched air ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene, urging the public to avoid the area.

British media reported that the collision caused major disruption to rail services.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on social media that the reports were deeply concerning, adding that his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
