South Africa's Sithole receives first red card of 2026 FIFA World Cup


MEXICO CITY, June 11 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole became the first player sent off at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after receiving a straight red card in his team's opening match against co-host Mexico.

The midfielder was dismissed in the 50th minute for bringing down Brian Gutierrez just outside the penalty area as the midfielder raced through on goal at Mexico City Stadium.
