"Backrooms" tops North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A24's horror film "Backrooms" took the top spot at the North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 81.4 million U.S. dollars, figures from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Directed by American YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Kane Parsons and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the film is based on the viral YouTube series Parsons created. It follows a furniture store owner and his therapist as they investigate a mysterious doorway that suddenly appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.

At 20, Parsons became the youngest director to lead a film to the top of the global box office, as the movie earned 118 million dollars worldwide over the weekend, according to Comscore.

Focus Features' R-rated horror film "Obsession" finished in second place with 26.4 million dollars in its third weekend of release. Its domestic haul has reached 104.8 million dollars, while its global box office total now stands at 148 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Disney and Lucasfilm's science-fiction film "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" collected 25 million dollars for a North America total of 137.6 million dollars.
