Dushanbe hosts Asia-Pacific meeting ahead of 2026 UN Water Conference

DUSHANBE, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference was held on Monday in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan, in conjunction with the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development," 2018-2028.

The event, organized by the Tajik government and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), attracted over 100 participants from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Water-related challenges are particularly acute for the Asia-Pacific region, home to more than half of the world's population, said Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma in his opening remarks, expressing belief that the meeting's outcomes will provide valuable contributions to the 4th Dushanbe water action decade conference and the 2026 UN Water Conference.

The 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development," 2018-2028 is taking place on May 25-28 within the framework of the Dushanbe Water Process -- an initiative launched by the Tajik government with support from the UN.
