"Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" tops North American box office in opening weekend


LOS ANGELES, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Lucasfilm's science-fiction film "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" dominated the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 82 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Overseas, the newest Star Wars film took in 63 million dollars, bringing its global opening weekend total to 145 million dollars.

The film, based on the hit Disney+ series "The Mandalorian," marks a major return for Star Wars to the big screen after a seven-year hiatus.

"Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" holds an approval rating of 62 percent based on 227 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore.

In second spot, Focus Features' R-rated horror film "Obsession" earned 22.4 million dollars in its second weekend. The film has grossed 52.8 million dollars in North America through Sunday.

Rounding out the top three, Lionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" generated 20 million dollars in its fifth weekend for a North American cume of 314.2 million dollars.
