ASML to help India build chip factory in the Netherlands

THE HAGUE, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML on Saturday announced its support for the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics' upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, as the Netherlands and India elevated bilateral ties.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Tata Electronics CEO and Managing Director Randhir Thakur and ASML President and CEO Christophe Fouquet, in the presence of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to ASML, the collaboration will focus on deploying the company's advanced lithography systems and solutions at the Dholera fabrication facility, supporting the operation of India's first commercial 300 mm (12-inch) semiconductor fab.

Beyond equipment deployment, the two companies also agreed to cooperate on developing domestic semiconductor talent, strengthening supply-chain resilience, and advancing research initiatives to support the long-term success of the Dholera fab.

The semiconductor partnership comes as the Netherlands and India issued a joint statement elevating bilateral relations to a strategic partnership and adopting a strategic partnership roadmap, committing both countries to regular and structured cooperation across a broad range of sectors.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said there is significant potential for India-Netherlands collaboration in fintech, critical minerals, semiconductors, green hydrogen, and artificial intelligence.

The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in areas including agriculture, water management, education, and defence.

After the Netherlands, Modi will continue his European tour with visits to Norway and Italy.
