2 killed, 12 injured in bus crash in Peru's capital

LIMA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 12 others injured Monday in a bus crash on the Pan-American highway in Lima, local media reported.

The accident occurred around 5:25 a.m. local time near kilometer 17 of the highway in the district of Villa El Salvador, according to state news agency Andina.

Reports said a minibus traveling from Villa El Salvador to Plaza Norte struck the rear of a bus that had apparently slowed down to pick up passengers at an informal stop.

Two people died at the scene, including a 20-year-old man.

The injured were taken to health centers in Lima for treatment.

Witnesses said buses and minibuses often race to pick up passengers along that stretch during the early morning hours, increasing the risk of crashes.
