Russia approves suburban rail development concept through 2035

MOSCOW, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has approved a new concept for developing passenger transportation by public rail in suburban service through 2035, the government said Wednesday.

The new concept was developed to replace a similar framework in place since mid-2014 and aims to establish a unified, systematic approach to address key challenges in commuter rail service, according to a government statement.

Under the plan, up to 7,000 train units are expected to be procured by the end of 2035, and commuter passenger traffic will increase by at least 15 percent.
