Georgia's population close to 4 mln: census

TBILISI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's population totaled 3,929,581, according to revised census figures released Wednesday by the country's National Statistics Office.

Women account for 52 percent of the total, with men comprising the remaining 48 percent.

Georgia remains a predominantly urban country, with 62 percent of its population, or about 2.44 million people, living in urban areas, while 38 percent reside in rural communities.

The capital, Tbilisi, with a population of 1,331,485, is home to roughly one in three Georgians. The western region of Imereti and the southern region of Kvemo Kartli follow, with 510,741 and 441,630 residents, respectively, accounting for 13 percent and 11 percent of the national total.

Outside the capital, the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, a southwestern region bordering Türkiye on the Black Sea coast, recorded the highest urban population share at 67 percent, driven by the concentration of residents in its largest city, Batumi.

The lowest urban shares, at 24 percent, were observed in the mountainous and predominantly rural regions of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Kakheti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti.

Georgia conducted its national census from Nov. 14 to Dec. 31, 2024. Preliminary results were published in late June 2025.
