LOS ANGELES, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Universal and Illumination's animated adventure film "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" remained victorious at the North American box office, earning 69 million U.S. dollars during its second weekend in theaters, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.
The family-friendly hit has grossed an estimated 308.1 million dollars in North America and 628.8 million dollars worldwide, surpassing Amazon MGM Studio's science fiction film "Project Hail Mary" to become the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year.
Based on the world of Super Mario Bros., the film follows "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which was released in 2023 and earned more than 1.3 billion dollars globally.
"Project Hail Mary" came in second with 24.58 million dollars in its fourth weekend. The film now has a domestic cume of 256.7 million dollars and a global haul of 510.6 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, A24's romantic comedy "The Drama" took in 8.7 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American cume of 30.8 million dollars.
