Orange alert issued in BiH over heavy rain, stormy winds

SARAJEVO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Wednesday issued an orange weather warning as heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to affect large parts of the country on Thursday.

The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute said the most intense precipitation is forecast in western regions, particularly in the northwestern Una-Sana Canton. Accumulated rainfall between March 26 and 28 could reach up to 137 liters per square meter in the border city of Bihac, with similarly high levels expected in surrounding areas.

Local authorities warned that heavy rain combined with strong winds could disrupt traffic, trigger localized flash floods, and hamper daily activities.

Meteorologist Nedim Sladic said a cold air mass of polar origin moving from Greenland toward the Adriatic will interact with warm, moist Mediterranean air, creating conditions for heavy precipitation and a sharp drop in temperatures. Rain is expected to turn into sleet and snow in mountainous areas, accompanied by strong winds.

Authorities have advised caution, particularly on mountain roads, urging drivers to use winter equipment due to the risk of snow and difficult travel conditions.
