Middle East conflict: KLM, British Airways also cancel flights to Dubai


AMSTERDAM (AFP): Dutch airline KLM announced Wednesday (March 11) that it had cancelled all flights to Dubai until March 28 for safety reasons because of the war in the region.

"Due to ongoing unrest in the Middle East, KLM has decided to cancel all flights to Dubai up to and including March 28," said a company statement.

"The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority," it added.

"We understand that this decision has a significant impact on our travellers and are doing everything possible to keep them well informed."

The airline has been working with the Dutch foreign ministry on the evacuation of its citizens stuck in the region.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that British Airways had also cancelled all flights to Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai and Tel Aviv until later March and flights to Abu Dhabi until later this year.

On Monday (March 9), German airline Lufthansa said it was extending the suspension of its flights to key airports in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Israel and Iran.

Lufthansa said it was cancelling flights to and from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Dammam in Saudi Arabia, Amman in Jordan and Erbil in Iraq until March 15.

Flights to and from Beirut in Lebanon were suspended until April 2, as were flights for Tel Aviv in Israel.

It has also suspended Tehran flights until April 30.

French airline Air France extended the suspension of its services to and from Tel Aviv and Beirut until March 13.

Flights to and from Dubai and Riyadh are suspended until March 12.
