1 dead, over 80 injured as storm winds batter northeast Spain

MADRID, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- A 46-year-old woman died after being struck by wind-blown debris as Storm Nils swept across northeastern and eastern Spain on Thursday, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported on Friday.

The woman was seriously injured when a masonry wall collapsed near the entrance of the factory where she worked. She was taken to Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, where she later died of her injuries.

Authorities said six people remain hospitalized with serious injuries related to the storm, while more than 80 others required medical treatment. Wind gusts exceeded 140 km/h in parts of the Catalan region, uprooting trees and damaging street infrastructure and outdoor terraces.

Catalan authorities said they received 5,939 emergency calls on Thursday, most of them in the Barcelona area. The regional fire service, Bombers de la Generalitat, reported 3,495 incidents, and more than 100 flights were canceled at Barcelona's El Prat Airport.
