U.S. stocks close lower


NEW YORK, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 669.42 points, or 1.34 percent, to 49,451.98. The S&P 500 sank 108.71 points, or 1.57 percent, to 6,832.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 469.32 points, or 2.03 percent, to 22,597.15.

Eight of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with technology and energy leading the laggards by going down 2.65 percent and 2.17 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, utilities and consumer staples led the gainers by rising 1.5 percent and 1.28 percent, respectively.
