BERLIN, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A nine-month-old infant died after a fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in Berlin on Wednesday evening, police said Thursday.

The blaze started at around 8 p.m. in an apartment in a 21-storey building in the eastern part of the city. Firefighters found a 26-year-old woman and her two children unconscious in a hallway, according to police.

One of the children, a nine-month-old baby, died despite immediate resuscitation efforts. The mother and her five-year-old son were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remain in critical condition, police said.

The 75-year-old tenant of the apartment where the fire originated was also hospitalized.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities said there is no risk of the building collapsing.
