76th Berlinale film festival opens, several Chinese films set to screen

BERLIN, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 76th Berlin International Film Festival opened on Thursday, with several Chinese films slated to be showcased during the 10-day event, one of the world's premier cinema gatherings.

Also known as the "Berlinale," this year's festival features 22 films competing for the prestigious Golden and Silver Bear awards.

Chinese cinema is also making an impression at this year's festival, with movies including Shanghai Daughter, Light Pillar, and Scorching to be shown across sections such as Panorama, Perspectives and Generation.

At the opening gala held at the Berlinale Palast, the festival presented Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh with the Honorary Golden Bear in recognition of her lifetime achievement and contributions to cinema.

The Berlinale is one of the world's leading film festivals and is held annually in the German capital. This year's Berlinale will run until Feb. 22.
