Moscow relocates 250,000 residents in 2025

MOSCOW, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The city of Moscow relocated 250,000 residents through its housing renovation program in 2025, with newly built housing areas exceeding 2 million square meters, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Monday in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The renovation program aims to provide about 1 million Moscow residents with new apartments free of charge to replace housing in aging five-story buildings, said the Moscow city government.

The government said that a total of 7.9 million square meters of housing has been built under the program since its launch in 2017, enabling the relocation of residents from around 1,600 old buildings.

According to the government, 450,000 more residents are expected to move into new homes under the renovation program during the 2026 to 2028 period.
