"Send Help" tops North American box office for 2nd consecutive weekend

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Twentieth Century Studios' thriller "Send Help" stayed atop the North American box office chart with an estimated 10 million U.S. dollars this weekend as the Super Bowl took a chunk out of the box office.

Major Hollywood studios rarely release new blockbuster films over Super Bowl weekend, because the biggest annual event in American football greatly reduces moviegoers' interest.

"Send Help," now in its second weekend, has grossed 35.8 million dollars in North America, according to data released Sunday by Comscore.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the survival film stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien as an employee and her boss who become stranded on a deserted island as the only survivors of a plane crash.

The romantic comedy "Solo Mio" from independent distributor Angel Studios opened in second spot with 7.2 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, "Iron Lung," a science fiction horror film that was self-funded, took in 6 million dollars in its second weekend, bring its North American total to 31 million dollars.
