MILAN, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The women's ice hockey competition of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics opened on Thursday with Italy, Sweden and the United States registering victories, while a virus outbreak forced the postponement of the game between Finland and Canada.

The highly-anticipated Finland-Canada game in Group A was postponed due to a norovirus outbreak within the Finnish team.

Officials announced that a stomach virus had significantly depleted Finland's roster, leaving only a handful of skaters and goaltenders available after thirteen players were either ill or in quarantine. In consultation with the International Olympic Committee and health authorities, the game was rescheduled for February 12.

The Finnish team emphasized the importance of player safety and mutual support as the team works to recover. Canada will instead begin its title-defending campaign on Saturday against Switzerland.

In the opening Group A matchup at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena, the United States delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Czech Republic 5-1. Led by veteran captain Hilary Knight and multi-goal scorer Hayley Scamurra, the U.S. team signaled its gold medal ambitions from the outset.

In Group B action at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, Italy defeated France 4-1 in front of a euphoric home crowd. After conceding an early power-play goal, the host team rallied with four unanswered goals.

"It was incredible," said Italian player Kristin Della Rovere. "I am getting a little emotional now with everything."

"I'm so proud of this group of girls. We have earned every second of this. Just hearing the fans, how many people were here supporting us. It is beyond special," she added.

Also in Group B, Sweden rallied for a 4-1 victory over Germany.
