4 killed in car-train collision in Russia's Pskov region

MOSCOW, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed in a collision between a car and a freight train at a level crossing in Russia's Pskov region, the regional branch of the Russian emergencies ministry said on Sunday.

According to local authorities, the driver of the passenger car drove onto the level crossing while the freight train was approaching at the Samolukovo-Nasva siding section, although the signaling system was properly functioning. The train driver applied emergency brakes, but the distance was insufficient to avoid the collision.

Three passengers and the driver in the car were killed. The train crew did not require medical assistance.

The Northwestern Transport Prosecutor's Office of Russia has launched an investigation into the accident.
