Spain urges citizens to leave Iran amid instability

MADRID, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Foreign Ministry updated an important travel advisory on its official website Wednesday, urging its citizens in Iran to leave the country "by available means."

In the notice, the ministry cited the highly unstable security situation in Iran and the surrounding region, reiterating its recommendation that Spanish nationals avoid all travel to the country.

The ministry also warned that most airlines have suspended operations and advised travelers to check flight information directly with airlines, as schedules may change. It noted that Iran's borders with Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan remain open to foreign nationals.

The ministry said it continues to monitor developments closely and advised Spanish citizens in Iran to maintain contact with diplomatic missions and follow official guidance.

According to the Spanish daily El Pais, fewer than 150 Spanish citizens are currently registered with the embassy in Tehran.
