MOSCOW, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Russia's railway network handled 1.3102 billion passenger trips in 2025, a 1.9 percent increase compared with 2024, Russian Railways announced Monday.
Of the total, 1.1835 billion trips were recorded on suburban routes, up 2.2 percent year on year, while 126.7 million trips were made on long-distance services, a 0.6 percent year on year decrease.
In 2025, the freight volume of Russia's railway network reached approximately 1.1158 billion tonnes, a 5.6 percent decline from the previous year.
Among the top freight categories moved via Russian railways last year, coal shipments totaled 324.5 million tonnes, down 2.1 percent year on year. Shipments of oil and oil products stood at 197.1 million tonnes, a 5 percent decrease.
Russia's freight loading operations in 2025 were impacted by external factors, resulting in a 10.5 percent drop in bulk cargo volume, including construction materials, ferrous metals and coal. Meanwhile, oil cargo shipments fell by 5 percent due to scheduled oil refinery maintenance.
