Fuel spill cuts water supply to 11,000 residents in central Romania

BUCHAREST, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Romania's Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) said on Friday that emergency crews are continuing to supply drinking water to communities in Brasov County after a fuel spill disrupted water services for around 11,000 residents.

The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations in Brasov is providing support to the town of Victoria and nearby rural areas, including Ucea, Vistea and Dragus, where the potable water supply was cut following an environmental incident at the end of December, the DSU said in a statement.

According to DSU, emergency teams have prioritized critical public institutions in Victoria, delivering drinking water to a nursing home, the local hospital and the town hall.

The disruption was caused by a road accident on December 30 near Arpasul Mare, when diesel fuel leaked from a truck's tank and polluted the local spring, which is the water source for the four localities.

DSU said local authorities acted immediately to secure alternative drinking water sources, adding that emergency services and Interior Ministry structures remain on standby to provide continued support to the affected communities.
