DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Mainline welding of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, constructed by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd. (CPP), has been completed, marking a major milestone in the development of one of East Africa's largest cross-border energy infrastructure projects.
According to a statement released by CPP on Monday, as of Dec. 28, mainline welding covering a total of 1,426 km had been completed.
The pipeline section constructed by CPP stretches 1,539 km, linking Tilenga Central Processing Facility in Uganda to the port of Tanga in northeastern Tanzania.
The statement said the pipeline passes through complex and challenging terrain, including wetlands, rivers, mountainous areas, and ecologically sensitive zones, posing high demands on construction planning, environmental protection, and project management.
It said CPP ensured steady progress by coordinating personnel, equipment, and material resources, while strictly adhering to international standards and project requirements.
According to the statement, at peak construction periods, the project employed more than 10,000 workers, with local employees accounting for over 80 percent of the workforce, significantly contributing to local job creation.
With the completion of mainline welding, the project will shift its focus to subsequent processes such as field joint coating, cable installation, pipeline lowering-in, and pre-commissioning, said the statement.
