U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 227.79 points, or 0.47 percent, to 48,362.68. The S&P 500 added 43.99 points, or 0.64 percent, to 6,878.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 121.21 points, or 0.52 percent, to 23,428.83.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with materials and financials leading the gainers by going up 1.35 percent and 1.25 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer staples bucked the trend by going down 0.41 percent.
