Landslides cut off villages as heavy rain hits Slovenia

LJUBLJANA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Continuous heavy rainfall in western Slovenia triggered numerous landslides on Monday, cutting off several villages and damaging local infrastructure, authorities said.

The village of Kozbana, in the Municipality of Brda, is among the communities now completely isolated after landslides blocked all access roads. Officials said it remains unclear when connectivity can be restored. No injuries have been reported.

"We have villages cut off that we hope to reach as soon as possible. There are a great many landslides," said Andrej Colja, head of the Civil Protection unit in Brda. He added that additional equipment will be required to deal with the damage.

According to the Slovenian Environment Agency, up to 100 millimeters of rain fell in parts of western Slovenia within 12 hours. The agency also warned that snowfall is expected overnight in some regions.
