Chinese School of Classical Studies marks anniversary with academic events in Athens

ATHENS, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese School of Classical Studies (CSCSA) held a series of academic seminars and activities in Athens on Friday to mark its first anniversary, with scholars from China and Greece having exchanges on archaeological research and academic cooperation.

Constantina Benissi, a representative from the Greek Ministry of Culture, highlighted the significance of the event, saying that the celebration marks not only an important milestone in the school's development, but also another step forward in strengthening the cultural and scientific ties between Greece and China.

"Within its first year of operation, the Chinese school has already demonstrated its determination to participate actively in this vibrant network of collaboration, bringing a new and dynamic perspective to the study of the ancient world and reflecting China's deep engagement with archaeology and classical studies," she added.

According to CSCSA Director Li Xinwei, through partnerships with the Greek Ephorate of Antiquities, the University of Athens, and multiple international archaeological institutes, the school's Chinese experts carried out extensive fieldwork and academic investigations across Greece and accumulated experience in stratigraphic analysis, artifact conservation, and archaeological display.

He said the CSCSA will continue to advance archaeological collaborations, strengthen the integration of scientific archaeology and textual research, deepen comparative studies of civilizations, and strive to build an original and globally influential framework for Chinese classical studies.

The CSCSA was officially established in November 2024. It is the first research institution on classical civilization founded by an Asian country in Greece.

A seminar on "New Progress in Chinese Archaeology" was held on the same day, gathering archaeologists from both countries to discuss the evolution of ancient technology, economy, and social structures from multidisciplinary perspectives.
