3 children dead, 4 others injured as monastery wall collapses in southern Myanmar

YANGON, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Three students were killed and four others injured when a monastery wall collapsed during heavy rain in Mon state, southern Myanmar, on Wednesday afternoon, an official from a local rescue organization said.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Konepawywarthit village in Lamaing township, Mon state, chairman of the Hnitkayin rescue organization told Xinhua.

It was raining heavily, and people had gathered to watch a football match, he said, adding that the children were standing near the monastery's brick wall.

Two children died on the spot, while another child died on the way to the hospital, he said.

The victims were between 12 and 13 years old, he said.

The injured are receiving treatment at Ye General Hospital, and two of them are seriously injured, he added.
