Sunni cleric killed in mosque in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sheikh Abdul Sattar al-Quraghuli, Imam of a mosque in Baghdad's southern Dora district, was killed on Friday inside the mosque, the Sunni Endowment, which oversees Sunni Muslim religious affairs in Iraq, said in a statement.

It noted that in coordination with security services, the perpetrators involved in the incident had been apprehended and will be brought to justice.

A source from the Iraqi Interior Ministry told Xinhua that al-Quraghuli was killed by a group of "radical worshippers" affiliated with an extremist religious group.

The source added that several individuals who surrounded and assaulted the cleric inside the mosque had been arrested by security forces.

Although overall violence has declined in Iraq since the defeat of the Islamic State in 2017, sporadic attacks on security forces, religious leaders, and civilians remain a source of instability in the country.
