Midsummer festival marked in Latvia with bonfires, music and traditions

RIGA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Activities celebrating the traditional Midsummer festival are underway across Latvia, featuring bonfires, music, and local culinary specialties.

June 23 and 24 are official public holidays in Latvia.

Most Latvians prefer to celebrate the festival in the countryside, but for those who stay in the city, a wide range of special events is being held to mark the occasion.

In the capital city of Riga, celebrations featuring folk musicians, pop artists, and bonfires are taking place in various neighborhoods.

Wild plants, especially herbs and flowers, play an important role in the festivities. On June 23, people gather these plants from meadows to weave intricate wreaths.
