Profile: Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah


BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah will pay a state visit to China from Wednesday to Friday at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Born in July 1946, Hassanal was installed as Crown Prince in 1961. He ascended the throne as the 29th sultan of Brunei in October 1967. His coronation was held in August the following year.

He serves both as head of state as sultan and head of government as prime minister. In addition, he holds the Cabinet portfolios of defense, finance and economy, and foreign affairs. He is also the supreme commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and inspector general of the Royal Brunei Police Force.

Hassanal has been to China 12 times for visits or conferences.
