U.S. stocks close mixed


NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended mixed on Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 358.67 points, or 0.86 percent, to 42,297.12. The S&P 500 added 9.18 points, or 0.16 percent, to 5,836.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 73.53 points, or 0.38 percent, to 19,088.1.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and materials leading the gainers by rising 2.25 percent and 2.21 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, utilities and technology led the laggards by dropping 1.19 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively.
