PRAGUE, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Charles University in Prague on Monday introduced new projects to strengthen the resilience and psychological well-being of its students and employees almost a year after the shooting tragedy at the university's Faculty of Arts.
The university said in a statement that it decided to open three sub-funds: a resilience fund and two funds bearing the names of two of the 14 shooting victims.
The resilience fund aims to support projects that promote psychological resilience, mental health and overall wellbeing. One of the projects to be financed from the fund is the new Resilience Center at the university. The other two funds will support students facing family tragedies that somehow hinder their studies.
"The past year has been a search for balance and a way for us to best provide assistance to the injured and become a support for all survivors. Together with the Faculty of Arts, the entire university tried to support the injured in their return to studies and academic life," said the university rector Milena Kralickova.
Meanwhile, the university has been implementing a range of security measures, including security drills and improved information transfer, at its faculties, dormitories, and canteens. Additionally, a crisis and notification system is being developed for specific faculties to ensure swift and effective responses in emergency situations.
On Dec. 21 last year, a student shot and killed 14 people at the university's Faculty of Arts building in central Prague before committing suicide. The tragic incident also left 25 others injured. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has called the shooting "a terrible act, unprecedented in the history of the Czech Republic."
