IMF revises down Romania's growth forecast for 2024

BUCHAREST, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its forecast for Romania's economic growth in 2024 to 1.9 percent, down from its April projection of 2.8 percent, according to the latest World Economic Outlook report released on Tuesday.

The downgrade follows last year's growth of 2.1 percent, with the IMF now expecting the economy to accelerate to 3.3 percent in 2025.

The IMF also projects Romania's current account deficit will widen to 7.5 percent of GDP in 2024, up from the previous estimate of 7.1 percent.

A slight reduction to 7 percent is expected in 2025, but the deficit will remain high, reaching 5.9 percent in 2029.

The inflation is forecast to average 5.3 percent in 2024, down from an earlier estimate of 6 percent, with a further decrease to 3.6 percent in 2025.

The IMF also expects Romania's unemployment rate to remain stable at 5.6 percent in 2024, before falling to 5.4 percent in 2025.
