Seven students stabbed by classmate in Portugal, with one in critical condition


LISBON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Six students were stabbed by a classmate at a school in the municipality of Azambuja, central Portugal, leaving one child in serious condition, according to local Civil Protection authorities on Tuesday.

The attack took place at the Basic School 1, 2, and 3 of Azambuja, located in the Lisbon district, during school hours. The victims, all between 12 and 14 years old, were targeted by their peer in an unexpected assault. One of the students sustained critical injuries to the chest and head and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Local emergency services, including six ambulances, the Azambuja Fire Department, and the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM), responded swiftly to the scene. The condition of the remaining victims has been reported as stable.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack, which remains unclear.
