Azerbaijan ranks among top global hazelnut exporters

BAKU, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan ranks 4th among the world's largest hazelnut exporters in 2023, according to the report from the International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Türkiye, Chile and Italy continue to lead global hazelnut exports, while Azerbaijan strengthens its position in the market. According to Azerbaijan's state news agency AZERTAC, the country's primary export markets remain Russia, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

In a bid to diversify its non-oil exports, Azerbaijan has expanded its hazelnut exports to new markets, including Ukraine, Belgium, Estonia and Israel in 2023-2024.

The hazelnut industry in Azerbaijan is largely driven by small-scale producers, with 99 percent of its production coming from individual entrepreneurs, farmers and household businesses. Currently, 39 companies are involved in hazelnut exports.
