DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Thursday urged regional commissioners to resolve challenges occurring during the conduct of the National Population and Housing Census that started Tuesday.

"Each region should collect a day's census statistics by 8 p.m. every day. This will help to detect limitations facing the exercise and resolve them," said Majaliwa during a video conference with the regional commissioners.

The National Population and Housing Census started on Aug. 23 and will be conducted for seven days until Aug. 29.

He said district and regional census committees should always monitor how the census was being conducted to ensure that all Tanzanians are counted.

Albina Chuwa, statistician general of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), said 5,060,158 households with 22,004,910 people had been counted by Thursday morning.

Addressing the nation Monday night ahead of the National Population and Housing Census, President Samia Suluhu Hassan urged all Tanzanians to show up during the census to enable the country to have appropriate statistics which can help in planning for development.

"Better data will help our country to plan for better lives and accountability," she reiterated.

President Hassan said preliminary results of the census will be announced in October.

The last population census was conducted in Tanzania in 2012.
