Did such a thing really happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

According to Kota Setar police, the hot air balloon in question had to make an emergency landing in a padi in Kampung Pisang, Kota Sarang Semut, near here this morning to avoid drifting out over the ocean.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Syed Basri Syed Ali said they received information about the incident at 12.12pm on Monday (Feb 23) from a villager, Bernama reported.

He said the hot air balloon lifted off from the Pendang Mini Stadium at 6.30am and was forced to abort the flight due to wind conditions.

He added that the hot air balloon belongs to a theme park and did not have permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Air Traffic Control (ATC) to fly in Kedah airspace.

"They only had permission to be in the Taiping airspace in Perak. The case has been referred to CAAM for further action," he said.

He said after landing, the two crew members and two others in a four-wheel-drive vehicle immediately packed the equipment and headed back to Bertam, Penang. – Bernama
