IN THE digital age, scammers are becoming increasingly bold in their tactics to deceive the public.

A Telegram channel claiming to represent the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry has been using the name of the ministry's Secretary-General to promote a dubious investment scheme.

But has the Secretary General actually endorsed any online investment platform?

The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry has issued a stern warning after the name of its Secretary-General, Datuk Hairil Yahri Yaacob, was misused by irresponsible parties in a suspected fraudulent investment scheme.

An account using Hairil's name was discovered on a Telegram channel called "Ministry of International Trade and Industry", the ministry said.

The ministry categorically denied any involvement by its Secretary-General in the investment scheme or any other investment schemes on any application or platform, including social media.

It said immediate action would be taken by reporting the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. and that a report would also be lodged with the police.

The ministry advised the public to remain cautious of suspicious investment offers and to verify the authenticity of information through official channels before taking any action.

It also reminded the public not to share personal information with unknown parties.
