QuickCheck: Did a 4WD vehicle ram into a motorcycle near the Duta toll plaza?

DRIVING on the slow lane is often perceived as a safer option, but it does not necessarily guarantee safety. A video has gone viral showing a motorcycle that was travelling on the left lane being hit by a speeding four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. The incident is said to have occurred near the Duta toll plaza on the PLUS Highway. Did this happen as claimed?

Verdict:

TRUE

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident, which has since gone viral, occurred at about 2.30pm near the Duta toll plaza.

"The victims - a 53-year-old man and his 49-year-old wife - were on a motorcycle on the left lane of the PLUS expressway when the incident occurred.

"The driver of the 4WD was attempting to overtake another motorcycle before ramming into the victims’ motorbike," he said in a statement on Sunday (May 11).

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said the 32-year-old man who was driving the 4WD vehicle has been detained in connection with the accident, which left the couple severely injured.

The husband suffered broken ribs and gashes while his wife was left bloodied at the head, along with broken ribs and a leg, he added.

"Both victims were rushed to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

"The driver of the four-wheel drive did not sustain any injury and lodged a police report over the incident at 6.55pm on the same day.

"He has since been detained and remanded for two days," he said.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

"We urge those who witnessed the incident to contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Farhad Kamaruddin at 011-31903054," he said.
