QuickCheck: Were two boys beaten up by a gang of masked bullies in a Penang school recently?

IT IS not easy being a teenager. Besides facing pressure to perform well in exams, they also have to learn how to adapt to secondary school life. If that isn’t difficult enough, some may find themselves on the wrong end of the school's "social structure" and end up being the targets of bullies. That said, two videos have gone viral of two boys being beaten up by bullies in masks.

Allegedly, the videos are of two separate incidents from the same school in Penang, is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

Seberang Perai North district police chief ACP Mohd Asri Shafie said police were investigating two cases of boys in Form One and Form Two respectively, who were beaten up by a gang of bullies who were wearing masks to hide their identities.

"The two incidents occurred on the same day, May 19, involving two victims who were beaten up by several other students in the boys' toilet.

"The first case occurred around 1pm. The victim was a Form Two student who was beaten up by a Form Three boy, while the second case happened at 3pm.

"In the second case, the victim was a Form One student who was assaulted by nine seniors. Our investigations revealed that in both cases, the victims were beaten with hands and feet but not with objects," he said in a statement.

He said for the second case, police arrested nine boys, aged from 14 to 16, who are students of the same school.

Two videos of the incidents went viral on social media last Friday (May 19).

Mohd Asri said police had seized six mobile phones to assist investigations.

The first case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code on causing hurt and the second under Section 147 on rioting, he added.

One of the videos shows a boy being repeatedly punched and kicked by a group of students.

Most of those in the video, including the victims, were wearing face masks and sports attire.
