IT has been reported that the Penang Hill funicular service is expected to be temporarily shut down in January next year. Is this true?
Verdict:
TRUE
The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said the funicular train service will be temporarily shut down for its first scheduled bi-annual maintenance from Jan 9 to 14, 2023.
PHC said it conducts two major scheduled maintenance tasks annually to ensure the funicular system remains in tip-top condition and meets stringent safety compliance checks.
"PHC also conducts regular checks and maintenance of its funicular system on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, plus the routine inspections that are carried out after operation hours," it said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 14).
During the shutdown period, visitors may opt for the privately-operated jeep service from Botanic Gardens or use the existing hiking routes to reach the summit area of Penang Hill.
